From the IGH catalogue (DataExpert®BIM) to Excel
Saving data from the XML catalogue in Excel
The standardised DataExpert®BIM catalogue is an XML file with a prescribed structure. Many industry applications can read the catalogue in this format. However, it is also possible to work with the catalogue data in Excel. These instructions show you how to import the desired data into an Excel file.
Importing XML with a template
If you use a template, the XML schema is already imported and you will receive a suggestion as to which fields from the catalogue can be inserted.
However, you still have the option of determining which fields you want to import into your Excel file.
- Download the desired Excel template Excel template for catalogues without articles in different designs/colours/variants/materials Excel template for catalogues with articles in different designs/colours/variants/materials
- Download and unzip the DataExpert®BIM catalogues from your suppliers
- Open template
- To import the catalogue data, right-click in the coloured table area, go to the menu items ‘XML’ → ‘Import…’ to select the catalogue and complete the process with ‘Import’.

Importing XML without a template
If you define the Excel file yourself from scratch, the required DataExpert®BIM schema is imported when you import the DataExpert®BIM catalogue.
- Download and unzip the DataExpert®BIM catalogue
- Open a new Excel sheet
- Excel → File → Open → Select unzipped catalogue
- Select ‘Use XML source’ task area
The ‘XML source’ area opens - You can now select the desired columns from the XML source using drag & drop and drag them into the table as required.
- To fill the selected columns with the data from the selected catalogue, right-click in the table area and select ‘XML’ → ‘Import…’ and select the desired XML catalogue → Import
- The columns of the table are filled with the corresponding catalogue data
General information
- Adding or removing information from the catalogue:
You can select the desired columns from the XML source using drag & drop according to your needs or delete columns that are not required.
→ It is important that the row under the label is a continuous colour bar (without column separation) and does not contain any empty columns (see image below).
- You can also add or remove columns after importing. After making adjustments, you must right-click or click ‘Update XML data’ in the developer tools.
- For items that have more than one piece of information (e.g. links, packaging units, ETIM properties, etc.) for the respective item, the corresponding item appears on multiple lines.
- If columns remain empty, this means that the corresponding data is not available in the selected catalogue.
Did you know that
- you can also select the XML source, catalogue import and data update via the developer tools? The developer tools may need to be activated first:
Excel → Options → Customise Ribbon → Main Tabs → Select Developer Tools → OK
- you can import multiple catalogues at the same time? To do this, simply select all the catalogues you want to import in the catalogue selection and then complete the process by clicking ‘Import’.
